| KCCI flays increase in power tariff - Aug 27, 2010 16:30:05 |
KARACHI: The Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) flayed NEPRA for allowing an increase of 26 paisa per unit in power tariff, saying that the decision would multiply the floods’ negative impact on the Gross Domestic Product.
“The increase of 26 paisa per unit in power tariff would prove disastrous as the country is passing through the worst crisis with millions of people displaced,” said KCCI President Abdul Majid Haji Muhammad in a press statement on Wednesday.

KARACHI: The dollar went slightly up against the rupee in the interbank market, dealers said on Thursday. The dollar initiated the day’s trading at Rs 85.63 for buying, rose lightly by a paisa and closed at Rs 85.64 for buying and Rs 85.69 for selling. The euro also recorded gains versus the rupee as it started the day’s trading at Rs 108.67 for buying, appreciated by two paisas and closed at Rs 108.69 for buying and Rs 108.89 for selling. The pound gained strength against the rupee as it commenced the day’s trading at Rs 132.11 for buying and after gaining 83 paisas closed at Rs 132.94 for buying and Rs 133.14 for selling.

KARACHI: The export of leather and leather products during the years 2007-08 to 2009-10 declined by 31.43 percent, Pakistan Tanners Association said Thursday. The decline in exports during the 2008–09 was 19.26 percent compared with 2007–08 and further exports declined by 15.07 percent during the year 2009–10, chairman BMG PTA, Agha Saiddain said.

| Silkbank posts Rs618m profit - Aug 27, 2010 16:20:21 |
KARACHI: Silkbank on Thursday declared a profit-after-tax of Rs618 million for the second quarter ended on June 30.
Silkbank reflected a healthy increase in advances of Rs9.3 billion, taking the total advances to Rs50 billion.
This reflects a 23 percent growth over December 2009 figures, whereas the industry grew by around two percent for the same period, a statement said.

LONDON: The devastating floods that hit Pakistan are likely to mean a rise of up to 10-25 percent in its coal imports, or around one million tons, this year to fuel the rebuilding needed, Pakistani and Indian coal importers said.
More coal will be needed for reconstruction, but the final tonnage will depend on the money available to import the materials needed, they said.

Responding swiftly to the flood disaster in Pakistan, Kimse Yok Mu Solidarity and Aid Association — an internationally recognised Turkish humanitarian and civic assistance association accredited by the United Nations — has been channelling material and in-kind donations on behalf of the Turkish public.
The NGO is catering to 2,200 families in Charsadda, Khyber Paktunkhwa and Multan with ‘Iftar’ meals on a daily basis since August 12. Within a matter of weeks, Kimse Yok Mu aims to erect two tent cities and construct houses for the flood affectees. Within the framework of Kimse Yok Mu’s ongoing vigorous fundraising and humanitarian assistance campaign across Turkey, collected financial and in-kind donations will be swiftly delivered to Pakistan on a special flight before the Eid.
