ISLAMABAD: Japan has decided to extend a grant assistance of approximately $23 million (2,022 million yen) to Pakistan for the expansion of water supply system in Faisalabad and urgent rehabilitation of sewerage and drainage system in Lahore.
The official notes for these projects were signed and exchanged on Thursday at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Statistics between Chihiro Atsumi, the Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan, and Sibtain Fazal Halim, Secretary of Ministry of Economic Affairs and Statistics.
The residents of Faisalabad have been facing water scarcity for years because of the growing industrialisation of the city and rapid population growth. In view of the magnitude of the problem, the Government of Japan will provide financial assistance to construct 25 deep wells in Faisalabad. It is expected that about 1.89 million people in this area would benefit from this project.
In Lahore, through the Urgent Rehabilitation Project for Sewerage and Drainage
System, pumps and trash rake systems will be either replaced or constructed in three pump stations to mitigate the damage in areas that are repeatedly inundated during the rainy season. It is estimated that around three million people and 105 square kilometer land would benefit from this. A lowering flood depth and shortening flood period will reduce the damage to people’s lives, traffic conditions, and businesses.†
At the signing ceremony, the Japanese Ambassador said water management is one of the long-term priority areas in Japan’s assistance policy towards Pakistan. The importance of this area has even increased after the recent floods.
The ambassador said Tokyo would send more relief goods including tents and water purifiers worth 20 million yen. Japan has so far committed around $14.6 million and is considering further support to the affected areas, Atsumi said.
Japan has also decided to dispatch a Japan Disaster Relief (JDR) team to operate six helicopters of the Self-Defense Forces (SDF)-three CH-47 and three UH-1 helicopters. From this week, these helicopters are arriving in Pakistan to conduct rescue activities and transport assistance goods |
