ISLAMABAD: Agreement on adoption of negative list approach at ministerial level talks between India and Pakistan would give quantum leap to bilateral trade, said Tariq Sayeed former President of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC)’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) while regarding it to be the first meaningful and serious step toward granting most favoured nation (MFN) status to India.
Sayeed is also former President of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), who represents SAARC CCI at the recent visit of Pakistan Commerce Minister to India applauded the positivism exhibited by both countries at the ministerial level stating that it would help bring about revolutionary changes on socio-political and economic fronts, which would largely benefit to the entire region of South Asia.
During interaction with both the ministers Sayeed appreciated the decision of the relaxing visa regime particularly for businessmen from both countries, he expressed serious concern over the reduction in time period of SAARC Visa Exemption Sticker (SVES) from one year to three months only. He requested both ministers to take up this issue with foreign ministries and restore validity of SVES for one year and increase number of stickers from 100 to 500 for each SAARC member nation, which was the original proposal of SAARC CCI.
Sayeed requested Commerce Minister of Pakistan to allow FPCCI to organise “ Made in India Exhibition” in Pakistan, which was due for last six year while in India, FPCCI has organised three “ Made in Pakistan Exhibition” during this period asserting that such events should be organised on reciprocal basis.
S M Muneer, President Indo-Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IPCCI) emphasised for the need for removal of city restrictions for business visa holders, stating that India was the only country, which applies such conditions. He also raised the issue of exports of cotton and cotton waste from India in the recent past, which were not honoured by Indian exports and had created embarrassment for Pakistani importers. staff report |
